The Processor

The CPU ( Central Processing Unit )

The heart of the computer.

For Intel based Boards.

The CPU socket is called LGA 775 ( Land Grid Array ).

• It supports all processors from Pentium 4, to the latest Core .

• It is now the only socket that comes on any Intel board from motherboard 915 and above.

• The nanometer technology has made processors to be incompatible with this socket on older motherboards. They need 975 intel chipset and above motherboards. ( Only for Core 2 quad and Core 2 duo. Pentium and celeron are compatible on all versions. Except 0.4A it is the specification for 945 motherboards. Pentium 4 and celeron fits on these boards having specification 0.5A ).
• This is totally technical only you have to consider does your processor support LGA 775 that’s it.
• All the high end or the newly launched processors i.e. Core 2 Quad and duo require more than or minimum 400 watts power supply.

Chipset

Chipset is the component on the motherboard which defines the performance of the board.

The main Chipset provider is Intel, Nvidia, VIA, ATI.

• There are different chipset for every motherboard. The better the chipset, better is the performance with better price tag.
• Most of the boards in the market are with Intel chipset. The type of chipset depends on your needs.
• There are graphics and Performance chipsets.
• Graphics are required for 3D applications & gaming and Performance for business purpose. You may choose according to your need.
• When you purchase a assembled PC vendor can suggest you the best Chipset.

The Memory ( Also called RAM, Memory modules, Sticks )

MAIN MEMORY

• Ram is the most important component of pc.
• It decides the speed of your PC. Today normally everyone is purchasing 1GB stick. Because its got cheaper than 512MB Ram stick.
• Todays board offer 4GB to 8GB expandable memory.( It has to purchased and installed separately. )
• There are two slots for 4GB and 4 slots for 8GB.

Slots

Slots are the insertion point for external components for a PC

• They include Ram, Graphics card, TV tuner card, Sound card etc.

SLI ( Scalable Link Interconnect )

It is the technology purely for gaming.

• In this the graphics slots ( in which the graphics card is inserted ) provided are 2,3 or 4.
• The motherboard itself supports the sli technology.
• This technology was discovered by  Nvidia Geforce.
• In this the  2  graphics cards are  are placed in the 2 slots and  a small connector is placed onto both the cards graphics card.
• This doubles the performance of the gaming pc. Every feature of the card is multiplied by 2; since 2 cards are set. If 3 then 3 times, if 4 then 4 times.
• The chipset differ to support the number of cards.
• Only nvidia Chipset 680isli supports 2 cards, 780i 3 cards, just an example.
